Abstract. Sedimentary δ 15 N records in two IMAGES cores (MD012404 and MD012403) retrieved from the Okinawa Trough (OT) in the western North Pacific reveal deglacial increases with two peaks occurring during the Bølling/Allerød and the Preboreal/early Holocene periods. These peaks are synchronous with previously reported δ 15 N peaks in the Eastern Tropical North Pacific, although the amplitudes (from 3.8 to 5.8‰) are much smaller in the OT. Similar δ 15 N values for the last glacial maximum and the late-Holocene observed by us at a site far from the present-day zones of water-column denitrification (WCD) indicate that the mean 15 N/ 14 N of nitrate in the upper ocean did not differ much between the two climate states. The accumulation rate of organic carbon and total sulfur content are used as indices of the local WCD potential. The results suggest that enhancement of global WCD rather than local denitrification should be responsible for the deglacial maxima of sedimentary δ 15 N in the Okinawa Trough. Our data could provide additional constraints to better understand changes in nitrogen budget during the glacial to interglacial transition.

Organic carbon (C) and total nitrogen (N) contents and corresponding isotope ratios were determined in surficial sediment (0-3 cm) at 94 stations ranging from 21 to 1995 m water depth off Tokachi, Hokkaido, Japan, to elucidate the distribution and source of sedimentary organic matter. Suspended particulate organic matter (POM) in the seawater and suspended POM and sediment in the Tokachi River were also examined. River mouth, and the sedimentary organic matter from 134 to 1995 m water depth was of marine origin. The organic C content in the sediment was high near the Tokachi River mouth, and also around 1000 m water depth. The C content was significantly correlated with silt plus clay content, with different regression lines for those stations shallower and deeper than 134 m, owing to several stations of higher C content with the elevated C/N ratio on the inner shelf. These results suggest that transport and deposition of organic-rich fine sediment particles by hydrodynamic processes were major factors 3 controlling C content off Tokachi. In addition, the supply of a fraction of terrestrial organic matter with high C/N probably also affected C content on the inner shelf.

Abstract. The East China Sea (ECS) and the South China Sea (SCS) are two major marginal seas of the North Pacific with distinct seasonal variations of primary productivity. Based upon field observations covering both the ECS and the northern SCS (NSCS) during December 2008-January 2009, we examined southward long-range transport of nutrients from the ECS to the northeastern SCS (NESCS) carried by the China Coastal Current (CCC) driven by the prevailing northeast monsoon in wintertime. These escaped nutrients from the ECS shelf, where primary production (PP) was limited in winter, might however refuel the PP on the NESCS shelf at lower latitude, where the water temperature remained favorable, but river-sourced nutrients were limited. By combining the field observation of nitrate+nitrite (NO 3 +NO 2 , DIN) with our best estimate of volume transport of the CCC, we derived a first-order estimate for DIN flux of 1430 ± 1024 mol s −1 . Under the assumption that DIN was the limiting nutrient, such southward DIN transport would have stimulated 8.84 ± 6.33 × 10 11 gC of new production (NP), accounting for 33-74 % of the NP or 14-22 % of PP in winter on the NESCS shelf shallower than 100 m.
