Dehesa is a remarkable agroforestry system, which needs the implementation of sustainable production systems in order to reduce its deterioration. Moreover, its livestock farms need to adapt to a new global market context. As a response, the organic livestock sector has expanded not only globally but also in the region in search for increased overall sustainability. However, conversions to the organic system have been commonly carried out without analyzing farms' feasibility to do so. This analysis is necessary before implementing any new production system in order to reduce both the diversity of externalities that the variety of contexts leads to and the vulnerability of the DDehesa ecosystem to small management changes. Within this context and in the face of this gap in knowledge, the present paper analyzes the ease of such conversions and the farms' chances of success after conversion in the face of global changes (market and politics). Different aspects ("areas of action") were studied and integrated within the Global Conversion Index (GCI), and the legal requirement for European organic farming, organic principles, future challenges for ruminants' production systems, as well as the lines of action for the post-2013 CAP (Common Agricultural Policy) and their impacts on the beef cattle sector were taken into account. Results revealed that farms must introduce significant changes before initiating the conversion process, since they had very low scores on the GCI (42.74%), especially with regard to health and agro-ecosystem management (principle of Ecology). Regarding rearing and animal welfare (principle of justice/fairness), farms were close to the organic system. From the social point of view, active participation in manufacturing and marketing of products should be increased.

This study estimated the possibilities of reducing costs and improving input use in a sample of Swedish farms specialising in beef production. Input use efficiency was measured in a multi-output, multi-input distance function analysis, covering the period 2008-2011. For comparison, both the classical radial and the generalised non-parametric approach were used. The results revealed that on average, costs could be decreased by 20%. Both models constructed frontiers where: i) the rankings of farms according to efficiency were positively and highly correlated and ii) the size and the significance of the parameter estimates were similar. Input-saving technologies were found to be positively influenced by livestock density, pasture availability and the use of coupled income support. Larger farms, farms with higher specialisation in beef cattle, farms with a larger number of animals older than 2 years, farms converting to organic production, farms located in less favoured areas and farms located in regions with a shorter grazing period were found be less efficient.

The organic farming shows growth trend all over the world. It became an integral part of the agricultural production not only in the developed countries, but also in the so called Third World countries. In the latter countries, the organic farming develops mainly in connection with the fair trade projects. The share of the organic farming in the agricultural land is in many countries above 10%, including the Central and Eastern European countries. The Czech Republic actively supports the organic production. The share of the Czech organic farming in the agricultural land has overpassed 11.5%. The paper deals with organic production in the South Bohemian Region. The aim is to determine main changes in the structure of the organic production in the period 2008-2011, specifically in connection with the changes in the subsidy policy. The increase of individual organically farmed areas correlates positively with the increase of subsidies set up within the Programme of rural development [2007][2008][2009][2010][2011][2012][2013]. At the same time, it is obvious that those subsidies affect the diversity of the agricultural crops. Keywords: animal production, organic farming, plant production, policy of subsidies, South Bohemian Region. AbstraktEkologické zemědělství vykazuje celosvětově růstový trend. Stalo se organickou součástí agrární produkce nejenom ve vyspělých zemích, ale i v zemích tzv. třetího světa. Zde se pak rozvíjí hlavně ve spojení s projekty fair trade. Také EU podporuje tuto oblast alternativní agroenvironmentální produkce. V mnoha zemích se podíl ekologického zemědělství na zemědělské půdě pohybuje nad 10% a to včetně zemí bývalého východního bloku. ČR aktivně podporuje ekologickou produkci. Její podíl na zemědělské půdě již přesáhl 11,5 %. Předmětem výzkumu je bioprodukce v jihočeském regionu, cílem pak vymezení základních změn v její struktuře v období let 2008-2011, a to konkrétně ve vazbě na změny v dotační podpoře. Rozšíření jednotlivých ekologicky obhospodařovaných ploch pozitivně koreluje s navýšením dotací v rámci Programu rozvoje venkova 2007-2013. Zároveň současné dotace do EZ ovlivňují diverzitu zemědělských plodin.
