Organ Transplantation in Saudi Arabia

Abstract: Organ transplantation started in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) in 1979 with a kidney transplanted from a live donor. The Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation has been established in 1985 as a governmental agency that supervises all national transplant activities in the KSA. Organ transplantation in the KSA has made great strides since 1985. Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation is playing a central role in all aspects of transplantation including education on all levels, allocation, coordination and pro… Show more

“…Subsequently the present examination was led with the plan to investigate the overall population's apparent hindrances and encouraging variables of organ donation. 7,14,15 Training programs have as of late been recommended as another approach in fathoming the organ lack. The all-inclusive community and the understudy populace specifically, should be taught about transplantation and the need to acknowledge the responsibility regarding give organs.…”

“…They hypothesized that the appearance of this unique CD57 subset maybe in part related to immunosuppressive factors, such as TGF-b1, with the resultant inhibition of the CD8+ T-cell differentiation [7]. Another study evaluated the presence of a tumor infiltrating CD57 cells derived from natural killer cells in primary squamous cell lung carcinoma and found that the survival was significantly better in patients with the increased proportion of these cells [9]. Furthermore, the prognostic significance of CD57+ T lymphocytes in the peripheral blood of patients with malignancy was supported by a study on advanced gastric cancer patients which showed that an increased proportion of CD57+ T cells in the peripheral blood indicates a poor prognosis manifesting as a shorter survival period after surgery in patients with advanced gastric carcinomas [10].…”

“…The Saudi Center for Organ Transplantation (SCOT) has laid down clear policies for the diagnosis of death by brain function criteria and acquisition of the approval of religious scholars on DBD. While SCOT facilitates the process of organ donation through coordinators assigned for different hospitals, most intensivists are not aware of this role [ 20 , 22 ]. Children who are potential donors comprise a significant proportion of all donors, with those under 10 years of age and those between 10 and 20 years of age accounting for 11 and 28.4% of all donors, respectively [ 21 ].…”
