Organ-specific autoantibodies in non-organ-specific autoimmune diseases with special reference to rheumatoid arthritis

Abstract: Sera from 367 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and from 102 patients with other non-organ-specific (NOS) autoimmune diseases were examined for the presence of organ-specific (OS) autoantibodies. The incidence of these OS autoantibodies was not increased in patients with NOS autoimmune diseases with the exception of thyroglobulin antibodies, which were significantly more frequent in RA (P less than 0.001) and in Sjögren's syndrome (P less than 0.05) patients than in normal controls. Investigation of 169 … Show more

“…In this respect, it is interesting that the histopathologic picture of pSS exocrine glands and autoimmune thyroid glands show great similarities, such as infiltration by activated T lymphocytes (3, 4), epithelial expression of HLA class II molecules (5, 6), and clonal B cell expansion (7). Furthermore, antithyroid antibodies have been detected in a proportion of patients with nonorgan‐specific autoimmune conditions, including pSS, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), or rheumatoid arthritis (RA) (8, 9). The question thus arises as to whether patients with pSS are at risk of developing autoimmune thyroid disease (AT).…”
