“…Rhebergen & Von Hacht (1996) published the results of an extensive inventory of erratic sponges distinguished on the basis of assemblage and possible provenance. They also described the composition of the erratic sponge assemblage from Gotland (Rhebergen & Von Hacht 2000). Rhebergen et al (2001) summarized all these data in a monographic treatment of erratic Ordovician sponges.…”

“…According to Rauff (1894), King (1943), Finks (1960), Rigby (1977Rigby ( , 1986, Zhan-Qiu (1981) and van Kempen (1990a), most Chiastoclonellidae are of Permian age and occur predominantly in North America and China. The oldest representatives known to date are erratic, isolated, silicified sponge bodies, of Late Ordovician age, originating from Baltica and collected from fluvial deposits in Germany, the Netherlands, and on Gotland (van Kempen 1990a;Rhebergen & von Hacht 2000;Rhebergen et al 2001).…”

“…The only Llandovery-age lithistids described to date are Calycocoelia (Zhan-Qiu 1990) from the Yangtze Platform, and H. sphaeroidalis (Rhebergen 2005 (Rhebergen & von Hacht 2000) from as yet unknown provenance on Baltica; 3 Silurian (Wenlock to Ludlow) assemblages from northern Canada (Rigby & Dixon 1979;Rigby & Chatterton 1989, 1999; de Freitas 1989de Freitas , 1991 The large majority of taxa in the Telychian assemblage are absent from the Ordovician assemblage. The assemblages have only six species in common, two of which are cosmopolitan (H. sphaeroidalis and Archaeoscyphia minganensis).…”
