Ordered mesoporous silica–(ZIF-8) core–shell spheres

Abstract: Silica-(ZIF-8) core-shell spheres with tuneable ordered meso-microporosity have been synthesized, showing that the hydrophobic micropore ZIF-8 shell controls the access of guest molecules into the hydrophilic silica mesoporous structure.

“…2a). For the in situ coating of ZIF-8 shell, it is believed that the surface groups of the Pd-loaded CCSs also play a vital role, as Sorribas and coworkers demonstrated that the unique interaction between the surface hydroxyls and Zn 2+ could provoke the nucleation, deposition and growth of ZIF-8 on the core surface [19]. Furthermore, the measured -potential of Pd-loaded CCSs is −20.9 eV in water (pH = 7), indicating the negatively charged property of Pd-loaded CCSs surface.…”

“…Thus, it is important to explore and develop smart delivery systems with both controllable release and site-specific characters. Upon the above drawbacks they proposed core-shell structured nanocomposite to hit the target requirements [12][13][14][15][16]. However, another drawback of the traditional drug carriers still need to be improved.…”

“…However, the low mechanical strength and block nature of the MOF products greatly prevent their application in these certain areas. To overcome this issue, great efforts have been made on designed synthesis of novel-type composites of MOFs with polymers or nanocarbons in recent years [8][9][10]. For instance, Schwab et al [11] reported the in situ immobilisation of a MOF (HKUST-1) into a hydrophilized macroporous polyHIPE monolith, and revealed that the resulting HKUST-1@polyHIPE composites effectively combines the macroporosity of the polyHIPE with the microporosity of the crystalline MOF of HKUST-1, which is an attractive combination for applications where diffusion processes are limiting.…”
