Ordered Hybrids from Template‐Free Organosilane Self‐Assembly

Abstract: Despite considerable achievements over the last two decades, nonporous organic-inorganic hybrid materials are mostly amorphous, especially in the absence of solvothermal processes. The organosilane self-assembly approach is one of the few opportunities for creating a regular assembly of organic and inorganic moieties. Additionally, well-established organosilicon chemistry enables the introduction of numerous organic functionalities. The synthesis of periodically ordered hybrids relies on mono-, bis-, or multis… Show more

“…35 The amphiphilic properties of alkylsilane monomers can be harnessed to create self-assembled nanomaterials, including lamellar and other ordered structures. 30,36 Importantly, upon self-assembly the siloxane groups polymerize creating mechanicaly stable structures. We recently developed a micron thick self-assembled multilayer AS coatings for resorbable Mg devices, 37 which have a number of important advantages.…”

“…On the other hand, the use of amphiphilic organosilane molecules could be an alternative route in the preparation of a structured functional silica material presenting a high organic function density, as already proposed in a few studies. 45 Thanks to the possibilities offered by this approach, aminoundecyl-triethoxysilane, which can be considered as an amphiphilic organosilane, has been used for the preparation of mesostructured materials starting from their self-assembly into reverse cylindrical micelles or lamellar arrangements. [42][43][44] These systems have recently been reviewed.…”

“…More recently, research efforts have centred on ways to inhibit the disordering effect of Si-O-Si condensation, in order to create ordered organosilica nanostructures. 9 When the ultimate aim is not the fabrication of mesoporous materials, the major route for synthesizing nanostructured hybrids has been the direct template-free self-assembly of silsesquioxane precursors, usually leading to lamellar structures. 8 In fact, unique chemical or physical properties may emerge from hybrid materials when organic moieties form mesoscopically segregated functional domains, both ordered and conned.…”
