Ordered array of Ag semishells on different diameter monolayer polystyrene colloidal crystals: An ultrasensitive and reproducible SERS substrate

Abstract: Ag semishells (AgSS) ordered arrays for surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopy have been prepared by depositing Ag film onto polystyrene colloidal particle (PSCP) monolayer templates array. The diversified activity for SERS activity with the ordered AgSS arrays mainly depends on the PSCP diameter and Ag film thickness. The high SERS sensitivity and reproducibility are proved by the detection of rhodamine 6G (R6G) and 4-aminothiophenol (4-ATP) molecules. The prominent enhancements of SERS are mai… Show more

“…In the wavelength range 600−800 nm, the electric fields are localized sharply at the junctions between two adjacent halfshells, as indicated with the arrows in Figure c‐f. Similar behaviors were reported for 2D structures of Ag semishells on polystyrene spheres,, Au semishells on hollow TiO 2 spheres, and Cu halfshells on SiO 2 spheres . It has been reported that an isolated metal halfshell shows two different plasmon modes: a transverse electron oscillation parallel to the rotational symmetry axis of the halfshell (α mode), and a longitudinal electron oscillation perpendicular to the axis (β mode) .…”

“…However, with respect to SERS enhancement, various attempts has been already reported in the literature, Yi et al . (2016) has studied SERS‐based on Ag coating on self‐assembled PSCC and Wang et al . (2014 )[63] demonstrated ∼ 3 order improvement in detection limit of the SERS performance of Au film over PS nanospheres.…”

“…To create plasmonic coloration, we utilized metal nanodome array structure consisting of a metal coated polystyrene (PS) bead layer which is also referred to as metal semi-shell or metal half shell structures. [28][29][30] The metal nanodome arrays are considered to be an attractive plasmonic metamaterial, as the structures can be created over a large area (centimeter scale) by a simple and scalable bottom-up nanofabrication process, and their optical properties are controllable by the size of PS beads and components of the metal layer. In this study, we created the metal nanodome arrays by using PS beads with diameters f of 200, 350 and 500 nm and thin metal lms, namely those of silver and gold.…”
