Order-parameter symmetries in high-temperature superconductors

Abstract: We present two representations of the order-parameter ͑OP͒ eigenfunctions for tetragonal cuprate superconductors, and for orthorhombic YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7Ϫ␦ and Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8ϩ␦ ͑BSCCO͒. Recent BSCCO c-axis twist Josephson junction experiments of Li et al. demonstrate that the tunneling is strongly incoherent, and that the OP contains an isotropic s-wave component, but not any d x 2 Ϫy 2-wave component. We propose a c-axis twist tetracrystal ring experiment. J c J (45°) at tϭ0.7. 14 Moreover, since BSCCO is h… Show more

“…Hence, orthorhombicity cannot explain the data of Li et al [6]. OP increases in amplitude, so that the overall OP effectively rotates near the twist junction [8]. However, the amount of twisting is strongly limited by the second bare transition temperature T 0 cB and by the bulk and twist junction Josephson coupling strengths η, η ′ .…”

“…For YBCO with point group C 1 2v , the mirror planes σ x , σ y (the ac, bc planes) contain the crystal axes a and b along the Cu-O bond direction in the CuO 2 layers. In BSCCO with approximate point group C 13 2v , the mirror plane σ b (the bc-plane) contains the b crystal axis (along a diagonal between the Cu-O bond directions) and the periodic lattice distortion [7,8]. The irreducible representations for the OPs in YBCO and BSCCO are given in Table I.…”

“…The Illinois workers have interpreted their observations as evidence of dwave superconductivity in the cuprate-planes, but this interpretation is based primarily on the facts that (i) they assume that the cuprate-planes superconduct, and (ii) faced with the fact that their data do not exhibit the expected U-shape (with a sharper U than BiO's expected for s-wave superconductivity), they postulate that they have evidence of d-wave superconductivity. But the work of Klemm [6] and Li [7] provides a convincing demonstration that the superconductivity in Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8 is s-wave in character, and we have found [8], using the bulk probe of muon spectroscopy, that the superconductivity of YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 is also s-wave in character with an uncertainty of less than 4×10 −6 . It is exceedingly unlikely that, in the bulk, YBa 2 Cu 3 O 7 could have swave pairing, while Bi 2 Sr 2 CaCu 2 O 8 has d-wave [4] (which cannot be reconciled with other measurements [9]).…”
