Order and disorder in the river continuum: the contribution of continuity and connectivity to floodplain meadow biodiversity

Abstract: Aim Aspects of connectivity and continuity operating in the River Meuse were analysed for their contribution to the biodiversity of the floodplain. From this analysis of the diversity and composition of the meadow communities, we aimed to derive effective biodiversity conservation strategies.Location The River Meuse is one of the larger rivers in the European Western Plains ecoregion. The alluvial plains of the river have a long history of cultivation, and for these plains the floodplain meadow vegetation is a… Show more

“…The multiplicity and dynamism of factors affecting the vegetation cover both in Poland as well as in Europe as a whole makes it necessary to widen our knowledge of the structure of plant communities and directions of transformations taking place inside them. At the present time, it is also very important to monitor these changes, primarily in order to undertake appropriate action to maintain the high biodiversity of seminatural meadow phytocenoses (Dierschke, 1999b;Elmore and Mustard, 2003;Ford, 1997;Isselstein et al, 2005;Kopecký and Hejný, 1974;Looy et al, 2006;Peeters and Janssens, 1998;Plantureux et al, 2005).…”

“…The Common Meuse between Belgium and The Netherlands is the non-impounded, non-navigable reach of the river Meuse, where the river descends from the Ardennes and enters the lowlands. The dynamic gravel-bed river character allows many species from upstream regions to settle in this river stretch (Van Looy et al 2006). The rain-fed discharge regime knows high peak flows and extreme low flows in dryer periods with a baseflow of less than 10 m³ s -1 and the extreme peak discharges being thousand times bigger.…”
