Analysis and confirmation of monolayer film thickness on metal oxide surfaces has proven to be challenging. XPS and AFM have been used to investigate the monolayer formation. However, these techniques are difficult to access and/or determine the composition of the organic molecules on the surfaces. Here we demonstrate the ability of MALDI-TOF to characterize long alkyl chain phosphonic acid molecules in thin films on titanium, iron and stainless steel. These systems are known to be stable, strongly adhered films. The thin films were characterized by IR, AFM, contact angle measurements and the results were confirmed by MALDI-TOF. Moreover, the MALDI-TOF was used to differentiate between mono-and multilayers on planar surfaces.

This review article considers the role of fatty acids and the mutual association of their long-chain (e.g. C18) alkyl and alkenyl groups in some important aspects of papermaking. In particular, published findings suggest that interactions involving fatty acids present as condensed monolayer films can play a controlling role in pitch deposition problems. Self-association among the tails of fatty acids and their soaps also helps to explain some puzzling aspects of hydrophobic sizing of paper. When fatty acids and their soaps are present as monolayers in papermaking systems, the pH values associated with their dissociation, i.e. their pKa values, tend to be strongly shifted. Mutual association also appears to favor non-equilibrium multilayer structures that are tacky and insoluble, possibly serving as a nucleus for deposition of wood extractives, such, as resins and triglyceride fats, in pulp and paper systems.

Recebido em 13/10/99; aceito em 26/6/00 INTRODUCTION TO THE SPECULAR REFLECTION AND REFLECTION-ABSORPTION TECHNIQUES IN THE INFRARED: (1) REFLECTION-ABSORPTION: This paper is the second part of an article aimed to present theoretical basis as well as some applications of two infrared reflection techniques: specular reflection and reflection-absorption. It is emphasyzed how much spectral simulation can aid spectral analysis. The usefulness of reflection-absorption spectroscopy as a thin film caracterization technique is stressed. Optical effects such as LO-TO splittings and their observation as Berreman effect are also addressed.
