Orchestration Requirements for Modular Process Plants in Chemical and Pharmaceutical Industries

Abstract: The increased flexibility resulting from the modularization of process plants requires an advanced strategy to supervise the distributed control systems (DCSs). The connection and coordination of multiple process equipment assemblies (PEAs) into a modular plant (MP) is called orchestration and conducted in a so‐called process orchestration layer (POL). Standardized interfaces enable a seamless integration of PEAs into an MP. Current process control systems do not yet meet all required features regarding to int… Show more

“…The first unit consists of the feed and pump unit (FPU), the second is the ultrasonic unit (USU) and the third unit is the product analysis unit (PAU). In keeping with the modular concept, this structure would consist of three Process Equipment Assemblies (PEAs), which could be used as a single module [75].…”

“…The main components of the FPU are two storage tanks, one containing solvent (water) and the other the feed, thus defined suspension or saturated solution (see Appendix A). For The whole plant consists of four units (see Figure 2), which would correspond to four Functional Equipment Assemblies (FEAs) according to the modular concept [85]. The first (PFU) includes the feed tanks and the process pump; the second (USU) is a seed crystal unit, where a CFI-designed coiled tube is immersed in an ultrasonic bath.…”
