Orbitolina episodes in carbonate platform evolution: the early Aptian model from SE Spain

Abstract: Among the Orbitolininae, Palorbitolina lenticularis (Blumenbach) is a common facies marker in Upper Barremian Lower Aptian shallow water Mesogean deposits and was hitherto ascribed to specifi c, but contrasting paleoenviron ments within the carbonate platform facies suites. The Albacete-Prebetic area (SE Spain) illustrates a model in which the Palorbitolina facies spread over the whole platform system. The development of the Palorbitolina sediments coincided with a transgressive trend at the end of an importan… Show more

“…Namely, the flat low-conical species are generally found in marly or calcareous marly levels, which seemingly represent transgressive to maximum flooding intervals (Vilas et al, 1995;Immenhauser et al, 1999;Jones et al, 2004). The local range of these taxa could be related more to the occurrence of the appropriate facies, controlled by local to regional sea-level history, than to evolutionary processes of speciation and extinction.…”

“…By the Barremian, new forms and a major new lineage appeared in Tethys, the agglutinated orbitolinids. These robust forms had the ability to survive in many shallow carbonate environments (Arnaud-Vanneau, 1980), however, they were most common in the outer platform (Vilas et al, 1995). They strengthened their conical test by subdividing it into many small chamberlets, which housed within their walls symbiotic algae.…”

“…The synchronous partial decline in the abundance of oligotrophic biota indicates an important deterioration of the palaeoenvironment as the result of highly trophic seawater (e.g. Vilas et al, 1995;Graziano, 1999;Simmons et al, 2000;Embry et al, 2010;Schroeder et al, 2010), and as also testified by the simultaneous local development of microbialites (Whalen et al, 2002;Schroeder et al, 2010).…”
