Orbital Hydatid Cyst in Childhood: A Report of Two Cases

Abstract: Intraorbital hydatid disease (IHD) is quite rare and represents < 1% of the Echinococcus cases. In our current communication, we report two children with solitary, primary intraorbital hydatid cysts. Both children presented with nontender, nonpulsatile proptosis. Imaging workup, including CT and MRI scans of the head and the orbits, revealed a retro-bulbar cyst in both patients. Surgical resection was performed by employing a fronto-temporo-orbito-zygomatic (FTOZ) approach. Accidental intraoperative rupture oc… Show more

“…Its incidence varies from 0.3 to 1.0% of all hydatid disease cases (Alparslan et al, 1990;Shah et al, 1998;Ciurea et al, 2006). But in highly endemic areas, orbital hydatid cyst represents 5e26% of all cystic orbital lesions (Talib, 1972;Gomez Morales et al, 1988;Shah et al, 1998;Belmekki et al, 1999;Ciurea et al, 2006) in our medical university centre, it accounts for 6%.…”

“…More unusual sites are retro-orbital, gluteal, zygomatic, bronchial, parotid, uterine, tibia and foot. Hydatid cyst of the orbit accounted for 0.3% of all hydatid cysts [1,2]. Typically, an orbital hydatid cyst is unilateral and occurs with or without hydatid cysts located elsewhere in the body.…”

“…Cooney RM et al [5] recommended endocystectomy with or without scolicidal agent for treatment of hydatid cyst in general, however exposure of the retro-orbital region and total removal of the mass without disturbing the globe and optic nerve is diffi cult. Ciurea AV et al [1] described fronto-temporo-orbito-zygomatic (FTOZ) approach with accidental rupture in one case. Transmaxillary approach can be used for hydatid cyst located inferiorly in the muscle cone [6].…”

“…(3,4) The orbita is a rare location for echinococcal infestation and makes up less than 1% of all cystic involvements. (5) Hydatidosis of the orbit is more common among young adults and children. (6) Other systemic involvements are rare in cases of orbital hydatid cyst.…”
