Magnesium is integral to many physiological processes, whereas variations in its levels, even within the normal range, can have critical implications for health. To explore the broad clinical effects of varying serum magnesium levels, we performed a two-sample Mendelian randomization and phenome-wide association study (MR-PheWAS) in the UK Biobank cohort. In total, MR-PheWAS analysis implicated a causal role of serum magnesium levels in five disease groups and six disease outcomes. In addition, our study indicated the gender-specific effects of nine disease groups/outcomes in MR estimated effects. The protein-protein interaction network demonstrated an interaction between the serum magnesium-associated gene DCDC1 and the cataract-associated gene PAX6. The present study verified several previously reported disease outcomes and identified novel potential disease outcomes for serum magnesium levels. The DCDC1 gene and the PAX6 gene may be the new targets for promoting the treatments of cataracts using magnesium intervention.

Optical vortices are optical fields that possess a helical phase and orbital angular momentum, which have found the application in micromanipulation, optical communication, orbital angular momentum entanglement, super-resolution imaging, metrology, etc. The urgent need for the wide spreading applications of vortex lasers is to increase the wavelength versatility. In this study, the nonlinear frequency conversion of vortex lasers with a focus on sum frequency generation stimulated Raman scattering, and optical parametric oscillators were meticulously reviewed. The characteristics of the topological charge transfer and output beam profiles of different frequency conversion were discussed. As the precise tuning of optical fields in both temporal and spatial domains shall be the trend of future studies, it is our hope that this review shall serve as a reference for future research. Combining these techniques with the streaming methods to produce optical vortices, i.e., annular pump, off-axis pump, reflection mirror with defect spots, spherical aberration, and birefringence, it is advisable to expand the wavelength and fill the wavelength gap in the ultraviolet, visible, and infrared bands.

Self‐Frequency‐Mixing Raman Laser Based on RbTiOPO₄

In this work, the generation of yellow laser emission from a self‐frequency‐mixing Raman laser utilizing RbTiOPO4 (RTP) is reported. The RTP crystal is positioned within the cavity of a Nd:YAG/Cr4+:YAG composite, passively Q‐switched laser. By utilizing this intracavity configuration, Raman conversion of the fundamental laser wavelength to Stokes wavelengths and frequency mixing of these near‐infrared wavelengths to the visible wavelength range is achieved using a single RTP crystal. Multiple visible wavelengths are generated, with a primary line at 574.3 nm and additional weaker lines at 552.3 and 563.9 nm. An average output power of 180 mW is measured from the output coupler end of the laser setup (note that laser emission in the visible wavelength range is also generated toward the input end of the laser cavity) for an incident pump power of 11.4 W. The results demonstrate the potential of RTP as a self‐frequency‐mixing, Raman crystal, which may be used for the development of efficient and compact yellow lasers.
