Oral tolerance in a murine model of relapsing experimental autoimmune uveoretinitis (EAU): induction of protective tolerance in primed animals

Abstract: SUMMARYOral administration of uveitogenic retinal antigens suppresses the expression of EAU induced by a subsequent immunization with these antigens. Effectiveness and mechanisms of oral tolerance in EAU have mainly been studied in the acute, monophasic model in Lewis rats by feeding antigen prior to induction of disease. In this study we investigated the effect of oral tolerance induction in the acute as well as the chronic-relapsing models in the B10.A mouse. In acute murine EAU we could effectively suppress… Show more

“…The severity of EAU was graded 0-4 as described previously (Thurau et al 1997). Briefly, the clinical scoring was based on vessel dilatation, the number of vessel white focal lesions, vessel white linear lesions and hemorrhages, and the extent of retinal detachment.…”

“…The presence of vessel dilatation, vessel white focal lesions, vessel white linear lesions, retinal hemorrhaging, and retinal detachment was determined. According to the severity of these findings, the EAU clinical scores were graded 0-4 as described by Thurau et al [41]. When the two ophthalmologists had different scores, the mean value of each score was calculated and then it was shown as the clinical grade at that point.…”
