Oral supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids and inflammation markers in patients with chronic kidney disease in hemodialysis

Abstract: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is an increasingly common public health problem that increases the risk of death due to cardiovascular complications by 2-3 times compared to the general population. This research concerns a prospective, randomized, double-blind study in patients with CKD undergoing hemodialysis. The participants were assigned to one of two groups: the study group (group A; 46 patients) received four capsules (2.4 g) of omega-3 fatty acids daily during the 12-week intervention, while patients in th… Show more

“…Four capsules of omega-3 supplementation decrease CRP levels (11), however other studies showed the CRP level significant change is none (22,25). We found four articles which were evaluated CRP levels after vitamin E capsules administration in HD patients.…”

“…Another of the biomarkers of functional status, serum albumin, did not alter in the intervention group compared to the placebo, which is consistent with prior findings. [ 37 38 ] Gharekhani et al . [ 39 ] reported that omega-3 increased the serum level of albumin compared to the control group.…”

“…Raising blood ω-3 PUFA levels by fish oil supplementation significantly reduced C-reactive protein (CRP) levels in HD patients in a pilot study [ 96 ]. A more recent prospective randomized double-blind trial in CKD patients undergoing HD found that supplementation with 2.4 g/d of ω-3 PUFA for 12 weeks significantly lowered the levels of inflammatory markers such as CRP, interleukin-6 (IL-6), and tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) [ 97 ]. The anti-inflammatory effect of ω-3 PUFA was confirmed for ESRD in a systematic review and meta-analysis of 13 RCTs that showed fish oil significantly decreased serum CRP and reduced cardiovascular events in patients on maintenance HD [ 98 ].…”
