“…Clinical data indicate that BCAA supplementation reduces the incidence of anorexia in cancer and malnourished patients and in patients with liver cirrhosis (Cangiano et al, 1996;Hiroshige et al, 2001;Marchesini et al, 2003;Laviano et al, 2005Laviano et al, , 2006Biolo et al, 2006). In a placebocontrolled multi-center trial in cirrhotic patients (n ¼ 174), 1 year supplementation with BCAA resulted in a decreased prevalence of anorexia from 52 to 25%, whereas anorexia prevalence remained unchanged in the control group (Marchesini et al, 2003).…”

“…In addition, leucine has known antiproteolytic properties (40,58). Indeed, in a small doubleblinded study, the nutritional status of malnourished hemodialysis patients improved when given oral BCAA supplements (26).…”

“…13 Similarly, a branched chain amino acid supplementations have been able to increase serum albumin and to ameliorate nutritional status in hemodialysis patients. 14 A special mixture including all of the essential amino acids (EAs) plus two nonessential amino acids (NEAs) (tyrosine and cystine) in a complex ratio that was designed to match metabolic requirements under high demand has been recently investigated in several studies. This amino acid formulation has been reported to exert beneficial effect in elderly people, 15,16 in elderly patients affected by chronic heart failure, 17 and in patients with type 2 diabetes.…”
