Oral rehabilitation of a patient with sub - total maxillectomy

Abstract: This clinical report describes oral rehabilitation of a patient with sub-total maxillectomy with palatine process of maxilla and horizontal plate of palatine bone intact to retain the maxillary obturator. Clinical examination has been performed to know the amount of favorable undercuts to be used for retention of the obturator for better functional efficiency. Successful prosthetic reconstruction of hemimaxillectomy defect is a challenging procedure that requires multidisciplinary expertise to achieve acceptab… Show more

“…When employed in a manner that respects the resilience of adjacent tissues and with adequate prosthetic adjustments, tooth-and muco-supported prostheses are associated with high success rates. If designed and employed correctly, patients can use prostheses to reestablish their daily functions; however, correct obturator care and maintenance are required in order to provide greater device longevity and maximize patient comfort during use [11,12].…”

“…Considering the successful rehabilitation of our patient, it is important to emphasize an interdisciplinary treatment, as masticatory function, speech, movement, and psychosocial performance may be impaired after a maxillectomy procedure; therefore, the cooperative participation of dentists, physiotherapists, speech therapists, and psychologists is extremely important for the physical, mental, and social recovery of these patients [11,13].…”

“…Traditional approaches as lateral rhinotomy and WeberFergusson approach and its modifications are normally used for the total and subtotal maxillectomy by malignant and benign tumors of the maxilla [12] and maxillary sinus. Those approaches provide good visualization, but most of the patients receive adjuvant radiortherapy, that can cause fistulae and dehiscence of the wound in the postoperative period.…”

“…Korzystny wynik leczenia protetycznego uzyskujemy poprzez stabilizację płytki obturującej i protez pooperacyjnych [7][8][9][10][11] oraz uszczelnienie i odciążenie obrzeża operowanego, stosując miękkie elastomery do podścielania protez [12][13][14][15][16][17].…”
