Introduction:Clinical photography is an important tool in teaching, clinical practice and academia especially for mucosal pathologies. Our aim was to examine differences in attitude towards clinical photography for mucosal pathologies among students.Methods: Questionnaires about clinical photography were completed by students in dental teaching hospitals in Birmingham (UK) and in Israel (ISR). The questionnaires focussed on the perceived value of clinical photography for a number of purposes and also explored perceived barriers to clinical photography and technology in general. The two departments have different access to clinical photography; in the United Kingdom a separate dedicated photography unit takes all the photographs, whereas in ISR the clinicians take their own photographs. Pearson Chi-squared tests determined statistical significance between categorical variables (P < 0.05).Results: Among the 163 respondents, there were no significant differences in the value of photography between countries or genders. The participants felt that the aims of photography included: teaching (99.4%), monitoring premalignancy (97.6%) and clinician communication (95.8%). More than 90% thought photography should be used for dysplasia and erosive lichen planus cases. Respondents from ISR were more in favour of photographing pathologies including simple leukoplakia, reticular lichen planus, vesiculobullous or pigmented lesions (P < 0.001 compared to the UK). Overall, the main reasons for not using photography were time constraints (25.5%) and access (21.8%). Conclusions:This study highlights a favourable attitude towards clinical photography for various teaching and clinical indications thereby demonstrating its importance. The title of this article may suggest a discussion surrounding missing teeth and intra-oral prosthetics. However, this article is intended to discuss a broader topic, one that has gained increased coverage across academic journals in recent years: the integration of oral health into primary care.The integration of oral health into primary care is still a relatively new initiative worldwide. In the US, the American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) has shown its support for a new model of care that promotes the integration of oral health into primary care. This model was outlined in the Oral Health Delivery Framework (OHDF). 1 The OHDF aims to support GPs to incorporate some oral health practices such as: promoting oral health, identifying risk factors for oral disease, providing patient education, and developing referral networks to support collaborative practice with dentists. 1 The potential benefits of collaborative practice are perhaps most pertinent among specific populations such as children, pregnant women, older adults, and people with chronic systemic diseases, for example diabetes. 1 In the UK, previous studies have suggested that GPs and dentists should collaborate more to improve the early detection of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). [2][3] It has been shown that patients who have regular dental check-ups are more likely to have OSCC diagnosed at an earlier stage. 4 However, only 50.4% of the UK adult population was seen by an NHS dentist in the 24 months prior to

Oral medicine education in predoctoral programs in US dental schools

Objective: the purpose of the study was to explore the structure of oral medicine (OM) education in predoctoral dental programs in the United States and to evaluate the students' perception of OM as a dental specialty. Methods: Two anonymous Qualtrics surveys (Qualtrics, Provo, UT, USA) were distributed electronically to the academic deans of all the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) accredited dental schools in the United States. Upon completing the survey, the academic deans were asked to forward the student surveys to their students.Results: Note that 26.8% (18/67 dental schools) of academic deans that participated in the survey, 224 senior students responded to the student survey. The results showed that the median number of OM specialists involved in teaching OM to predoctoral students was two. Oral cancer screening and diagnosis and management of oral mucosal diseases were identified by the majority of respondents (95.7%; n = 214 and 96.5%; n = 216), respectively, as part of the scope of practice of OM specialists. Although most students reported Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) and General Practice Residency (GPR) (18.67% n = 42 each) as postgraduate specialties of interest, students' positive impression in OM increased by a crude average of 0.4 with each additional OM faculty member in the school (p = 0.000; 95% CI 0.207-0.594). Conclusion: OM faculty members are in an important position to enhance dental students' perception and interest in OM as a specialty, which would lead to improved awareness of the scope of the specialty and consideration of pursuing specialty training.
