Oral Kaposi Sarcoma in HIV-seronegative Saudi patient: Literature review and case report

Abstract: Kaposi Sarcoma (KS) is an intermediate neoplasm affecting the endothelial cells of mucous membranes and skin. It arises most commonly among HIV-infected individuals. We present an intra-oral KS in an 80-year-old Saudi male patient, who is HIV-seronegative, non-immunosuppressed, and with no history of organ transplantation. The patient was treated with fractionated radiation therapy, and had no recurrence in the 48 months of follow-up. The clinical disease, histologic features, and treatment modality used, as w… Show more

“…Although literature regarding management for HIV-negative oral KS is sparse, one prospective study using RT alone for KS showed a local control rate of 83% with 40 Gy delivered in 20 fractions. 3 This dose regimen correlates with what was recommended for our patient. The decrease in purple pigmentation was greatest, and lesion failure was lowest with this regimen when compared with the dose regimens of 20 Gy in 10 fractions and 8 Gy in 1 fraction.…”

“…The majority of the other reported cases of HIV-negative oral KS are in males older than the age of 45. [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] Only one other study with a young patient was discovered that reported a 27-year-old male with a similar presentation. 2 Although literature regarding management for HIVnegative oral KS is sparse, one prospective study using RT alone for KS showed a local control rate of 83% with 40 Gy delivered in 20 fractions.…”

“…24 The therapeutic approach for HIV-negative KS can be surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and interferon-a. [14][15][16][23][24][25][26][27][28][29][30] For KS associated with HIV, treatment with highly active antiretroviral therapy is the first modality considered. The prognosis is variable, depending on the KS type and the patient's immune status.…”

“…Las manifestaciones orales son muy infrecuentes (2 %), sobre todo como clínica de debut. Suelen localizarse en mucosa de paladar, encía y lengua 6 . Cuando existen lesiones nodulares intraorales, se considera una enfermedad avanzada debido a la frecuente relación sincrónica con una afectación sistémica de mayor/menor grado, como sucede en nuestro paciente 2 .…”
