Oral intake of Lactobacillus pentosus strain b240 accelerates salivary immunoglobulin A secretion in the elderly: A randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind trial

Abstract: BackgroundImmunoglobulin A (IgA) secretion in saliva decreases with age and may be the cause of increased vulnerability of the elderly to respiratory infections. The effect of oral intake of lactic acid bacteria on salivary secretory IgA (SIgA) in the elderly has not been reported. The objective of this study was to demonstrate the acceleration of salivary SIgA secretion by oral intake of Lactobacillus pentosus strain b240 (b240) in the elderly.ResultsA total of 80 healthy elderly individuals were randomly all… Show more

“…Several criteria have to be met in selecting probiotic strains, including acid and bile tolerance, survival through the gastrointestinal track, ability to adhere to intestinal surfaces, antimicrobial activity against potentially pathogenic bacteria, and good technological properties [39]. Functional properties of probiotics include hypocholesterolemic activity by lowering plasma cholesterol [40], preventing and treating diarrhea [37], and altering the immune system [41,42]. The mechanisms by which probiotics exert their beneficial effects on the host include the reduction of luminal pH, competition with pathogens for adhesion sites and nutritional sources, secretion of antimicrobial substances, toxin inactivation, and immune stimulation [43].…”

“…In clinical settings, the intake of b240 for 3 [14] or 12 weeks [15] results in a significant increase in SIgA secretion in the saliva, without any attendant side effects. This ability to complement the mucosal immune response by augmenting SIgA production prompted …”

“…Probiotics induce cellular immunity in phagocyte and NK cells [33,41] and promote IgA secretion into saliva to enhance the vaccine effects [35,42]. Furthermore, the metabolites of probiotics, such as short-chain fatty acids, and the peptidoglycan components of probiotics appear benefits on both the host gut epithelium and microbiota by modulating the immune function [43,44].…”
