Oral impact on daily performance (OIDP) scale for use in Sri Lankan adolescents: a cross sectional modification and validation study

Abstract: Background: Oral Health Related Quality of Life (OHRQoL) measures play an important role in understanding subjective patient experiences in oral health care. The Oral Impact on Daily Performance (OIDP) scale is a validated OHRQoL tool that measures the impact and extent to which an individual's daily activities may be compromised by their oral health. It is commonly used to facilitate oral health service planning. The aim of this study was to modify and validate a Sinhalese version of the OIDP for use in Sri L… Show more

“…There are several oral-health quality-of-life instruments such as GOHAI (Geriatric Oral Health Assessment Index) [ 61 ] used for elderly patients and OIDP (oral impacts on daily performances) for adult and adolescent use [ 62 ]. The most frequently applied tests are OHIP with its shorter version OHIP-14, with an easy and quick application.…”

“…The OIDP index was initially developed by Adulyanon [ 6 ] and later modified and validated in a sample of 220 Sri Lankan adolescents aged 15–19 [ 8 ]. During cross-cultural adaptation of the questionnaire, some items were modified and the scoring system was revised to report only the severity of the impact with a recall period of three months.…”

“…A number of questionnaires are available to measure socio dental indicators in a population, including the Oral Impact on Daily Performance (OIDP) tool [ 6 ]. The OIDP is conceptually based on the International Classification of Impairments, Disabilities and Handicaps created by WHO in 1980 [ 7 ], and validated on a group of Sri Lankan Adolescents [ 8 ]. The association between sociodemographic and socioeconomic factors, clinical dental conditions and OHRQoL indicators has been investigated in adolescent populations across the world.…”

“…This three‐factor structure has since been validated in several studies [ 35 , 36 , 37 ]. However, several studies have also found both one‐factor and two‐factor structure solutions [ 38 , 39 ]. The OIDP scale consists of eight items and is measured using a five‐point Likert‐type scale (1 = every day or almost every day, 2 = once or twice a week, 3 = once or twice a month, 4 = less than once a month, and 5 = never), with a minimum sum score of 8 and a maximum sum score of 40.…”
