Oral Health Status of Mississippi Delta 3– to 5‐Year‐Olds in Child Care: An Exploratory Study of Dental Health Status and Risk Factors for Dental Disease and Treatment Needs

Abstract: Conducting oral health exams and research in child care venues was possible, yet presented challenges. The combined use of two parental variables, reported soft drink consumption and abscess history, appears promising for caries prediction. Implementation of oral health programs and research in child care venues merits further exploration.

“…At least, the basic level of knowledge about oral health, especially about early childhood caries is an important requirement for the prevention of this disease, which heavily influences the attitudes and behaviour of each individual who takes care of children. Although parents have primary responsibility for undertaking early preventive and correctional oral interventions, secondary caregivers also have an important role (42). In our study, the knowledge score correlated well with the total score of the questionnaire measuring attitudes and behaviour, confirming once more an important link between knowledge and attitudes and behaviour concerning the EEC.…”

“…In other studies, urban Mexican American and immigrant Latino mothers rarely recognized cariogenic food beyond candy and demonstrated uncertainty as to how exactly bottle feeding is detrimental to oral health (Hoeft et al, 2010;Horton & Barker, 2008). In another study, ninety eight percent of children had juice in bottles or sippy cups (Southward et al, 2006). In Hong Kong, 60% gave fruit juices in bottles, some consuming non-diary products more than six times per day (Chan et al, 2002).…”

“…Left untreated, the pain and infection caused by tooth decay can lead to problems in eating, speaking, and learning. 9 If a child is suffering pain from a dental problem, it may affect the child's school attendance, and mental and social well-being while at school. 10 When children's acute dental problems are treated and they are not experiencing pain, their learning and school- attendance records improve.…”
