Mental health problems have become a major public health problem worldwide and are more common among middle-aged and elderly people in China. Research on the effect of education on depression is limited, and whether the relationship between education and depression changes over the life course remains unclear. This study was based on the cross-sectional data of 15,767 middle-aged and elderly individuals in the 2018 tracking survey (Wave 4) of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) database. Multiple linear regression and bootstrap methods were developed to detect the mediating effect of education on depression. In all samples or different age groups, education was significantly positively associated with depression. Three mediators (economic level, health-related lifestyle, and cognitive level) were significantly positively associated with depression, and cognitive level had a greater effect on depression than economic level and health-related lifestyle. The total, direct, and indirect effects of the whole samples and elderly samples were significant; however, the direct effect of the middle-aged samples was insignificant, and the total and indirect effects of the three mediating pathways were all significant, that is, economic level, health-related lifestyle, and cognitive level should produce complete mediation. The multiple linear regression and bootstrap methods could successfully detect the mediating effect of education on depression. On the basis of the education, economic level, health-related lifestyle, cognitive level, and depression of middle-aged and elderly people, we established and compared the total, direct, and mediating effects of education on depression under the life course. The mediating variables should be further increased, and the measurement methods of depression should be developed to improve the credibility of the research results.

Purpose This study identifies the impact of the absence of dental support for patients with cancer whose clinical dental care was interrupted by the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic. Methods Individuals with oncologic diseases were selected from a telephone list of a Clinical Research Center (CRC) that specialized in the care of patients with cancer at the Bauru School of Dentistry, University of São Paulo (FOB/USP). The convenience sample comprised 280 patients (aged > 18 years) with a history of cancer that underwent dental treatment at the FOB/USP CRC in 2019 and did not receive care in 2020 owing to the pandemic. The participants completed a questionnaire sent via email or a text messaging application. Individuals receiving treatment or who were already treated for cancer were divided into two groups for data tabulation. Statistical analyses were performed using Fisher’s and chi-square tests. Results Of the 280 patients, 104 answered the questionnaire, and 75 (72.1%) were women. Among the women, 45 (60.0%) were receiving antineoplastic treatment, and 30 (40.0%) had already been treated. Among the men, 15 (51.7%) were receiving antineoplastic treatment, and 14 (48.3%) had already been treated. Regarding oral problems that arose during the pandemic, dental pain when eating hot or cold food or drinks (57.0%), muscle pain (53.8%), and difficulties when chewing (51.0%) were the most common reported among patients. Furthermore, most individuals reported not having received any type of remote dental follow-up, before being contacted by our team, which could contribute to reducing these oral problems. Conclusion It is impossible to say whether the absence of dental support in cancer patients during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic had a negative impact on oral issue rates.

Introduction: Strengthening the dental public health (DPH) of the pediatric population requires prioritizing development with the identification of key stakeholders and their leading functions. The aim. To analyze the current state and identify prospects for intra-industry and inter-sectoral cooperation in the process of strengthening the dental public health of the child population to justify ways of optimization. Materials and methods. A cross-sectional study using expert assessments involving 15 highly competent experts (competence level above 0.85) was conducted through a specially designed program. Bibliosemantic and sociological methods were employed. Expert assessments and stakeholder mapping were performed, visualizing the «authority-interest» relationship of different interested groups on a two-dimensional model. The results were analyzed using standard statistical methods with the application of Jupyter Notebook (https://jupyter.org/install). Intra-class correlation coefficients were used to assess the agreement of expert opinions. A significance level of p<0.05 was considered critical in testing all statistical hypotheses. Results. The graphical analysis allowed for the identification of stakeholders and determination of their roles in the DPH system. Groups with high and low levels of power and interest were identified. The agreement among experts regarding the determination of power and interest was respectively ICC=0.76 (95% CI 0.56 – 0.91) and ICC=0.79 (95% CI 0.59 – 0.92). The necessity of targeted efforts with each group, considering their capabilities and limitations, was emphasized. Key stakeholders included families, communities, family physicians, public health institutions, pediatric dentists, and others. Primary functions aimed at strengthening children’s dental health were attributed to influencing determinants of dental health, intersectoral collaboration and support for relevant initiatives at the local level are essential. Conclusions. The importance of developing and implementing programs aimed at improving the dental health of the child population has been established. Emphasis is placed on the significance of collaboration among various stakeholders in supporting a strategic approach to managing DPH.
