RESUMEN: La parálisis cerebral (PC) es un trastorno neurológico que afecta aproximadamente 2 de cada 1000 nacidos vivos. Se describe como un grupo de trastornos del desarrollo del movimiento, equilibrio y postura, que causan limitación de actividad. Algunos estudios han planteado que la PC podría aumentar el riesgo de traumatismos dentoalveolares (TDA). El objetivo de este estudio fue revisar la evidencia científica disponible sobre prevalencia y tendencias de TDA en pacientes con PC, y compararla con la prevalencia de TDA en sujetos sin PC. Se realizó una búsqueda sistemática en Pubmed, Scielo y Lilacs. Se evaluaron títulos y resúmenes, excluyendo casos clínicos, revisiones sistemáticas, artículos duplicados y/o no atingentes al tema. Se incluyeron artículos que reportan prevalencia de TDA en personas con PC y se extrajo la información sobre el tipo estudio, metodología, prevalencia, tipo de diente, de TDA más frecuente en PC y datos de prevalencia de grupo control. Se identificó un total de 32 artículos, de los cuales se seleccionaron e incluyeron 12 estudios para la revisión sistemática y de ellos cuatro se utilizaron en el metaanálisis. La prevalencia de TDA en personas con PC reportada en estos estudios mostró un rango entre 10,6-76,5 %. Los incisivos superiores fueron el tipo de diente más afectado por TDA. Sólo cuatro estudios comparan con un grupo control. La prevalencia de TDA fue mayor en sujetos con PC que en sujetos sanos (odds ratio 1,58 [95 % IC= 0,66 -3,77]). Sin embargo, esta diferencia no fue estadísticamente significativa y los estudios incluidos presentaron una alta heterogeneidad.PALABRAS CLAVE: traumatismo dentoalveolar, parálisis cerebral, revisión.

Introduction Good oral health is important for good overall health. Studies have reported poorer oral health outcomes for people with cerebral palsy, but there has been no synthesis of the evidence surrounding this and, there are no clear oral health recommendations for people with cerebral palsy globally. This review synthesizes the existing knowledge base on oral health in people with cerebral palsy and provides recommendations for future research. Methods A scoping review was conducted to assess the current literature. Databases were searched using relevant search terms. Study outcomes were synthesized according to their reported outcomes. Results One hundred seventy three studies were included in this review. Children with cerebral palsy have an increased risk for dental caries and untreated caries. Higher saliva osmolality is a major contributor to increased dental caries. People with cerebral palsy are more likely to experience tooth wear and bruxism. Children and their care‐givers have poor oral health related quality of life. There is a large unmet need for oral healthcare in this group. There is no suggested plan for the prevention of poor oral health for this group. A high number of studies included related to research is conducted in low‐ and middle‐income countries, care should be taken in applying results outside this context. There is a lack of research conducted in people with cerebral palsy, 18 years and over. Conclusion There is a higher risk for poor oral health in people with cerebral palsy and there is a large unmet need to dental care in this group. This study highlights the need for further research to focus on adults with cerebral palsy and an of understanding the oral health care outcomes in the context of settings. The authors recommend the inclusion of classification systems and the integration of disability inclusive language in future studies.

Background The era of modern information technology enables multiple methods and modes of collecting self-reported oral health information. The scope of the use of these various modalities has not been well classified or summarized, therefore it is necessary to study the degree to which various technologies were used to collect oral health outcomes and related data. This paper reports on a scoping review of the range of data collection methods in quantitative research to measure self-reported oral health status. All methods of data collection were assessed; papers whose methodologies employed newer technologies were identified. Method The review was guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Extension for Scoping Reviews (PRISMA-ScR) with the search on four online bibliographic databases. We analyzed peer-reviewed articles and reviews published between 2011 and September 2021 to determine data collection methods. Eligible publications were required to use quantitative methods that have a principal objective of measuring self-assessed oral health status, and/or oral health-related quality of life. Result We examined the past decade-long trends and found that there has been an increased interest in assessing self-reported oral health and oral health related quality of life data, a dominance of impact measures used, and the application of technologies to the methods. We found that 50 percent of all papers focused mainly on an impact measure. Technologies used included: computer-generated sample populations through polling techniques and crowd-sourcing software; together with tablets and computers to assist in data collection. Conclusion The study provides an overview of methods and modes to collect self-reported oral health data, especially with emerging technologies. Contemporary web-based approaches offer enhanced opportunities for survey research to boost recruitment, participation of study subjects with wide and diverse backgrounds from almost unlimited geographic areas, and efforts to improve quality by assuring increased response rates and reducing bias, especially in longitudinal studies. Several studies with strong standard methods of conducting oral health studies that have been successfully collecting these data for years were often not likely to adopt newer technologies because computer access is not available to their populations.
