La población de la tercera edad está expuesta a múltiples factores de riesgo no solo en su salud general, sino también en su salud oral, que asimismo puede afectar notablemente su calidad de vida, bienestar e integridad. La literatura demuestra cómo este tipo de población es más susceptible a presentar condiciones sistémicas asociadas con manifestaciones en la cavidad oral, así como la enfermedad periodontal y la caries, hasta causar pérdida dental, riesgo que se incrementa a medida que aumenta la edad. Esta revisión bibliográfica toma en cuenta información a partir del 2001. Se incluyen estudios realizados en personas de la tercera edad, en los que se establece una relación entre la calidad de vida y la salud oral.Palabras clave: calidad de vida, salud oral, envejecimiento. Quality of Life and its Relationship to Oral Health among the ElderlyAbstract. The elderly are exposed to multiple risk factors involving not only general health but also oral health, which can also notably affect their quality of life, well-being and integrity. The literature shows how this population is more susceptible to systemic conditions associated with oral cavity manifestations, as well as periodontal disease and cavities, to the point of causing tooth loss, a risk that increases with age. This bibliographical review takes into account information beginning in 2001. It includes studies made on the elderly, in which a relationship is established between quality-of-life and oral health.Keywords: quality of life, oral health, aging. Qualidade de vida e sua relação com a saúde oral em pessoas da terceira idadeResumo. A população da terceira idade está exposta a múltiplos fatores de risco não só em sua saúde geral, senão também na sua saúde oral, que assim mesmo pode afetar notavelmente sua qualidade de vida, bem-estar e integridade. A literatura demonstra como este tipo de população é mais susceptível a apresentar condições sistêmicas associadas a manifestações na cavidade oral, bem como a doença periodontal e a cárie, até causar perda dental, risco que se incrementa à medida que aumenta a idade. Esta revisão bibliográfica considera informação a partir de 2001. Incluem-se estudos realizados com pessoas da terceira idade, nos quais se estabelece uma relação entre a qualidade de vida e a saúde oral.Palavras-chave: qualidade de vida, saúde oral, envelhecimento.
