Oral fucoidan improves muscle size and strength in mice

Abstract: Fucoidan is a sulfated polysaccharide found in a range of brown algae species. Growing evidence supports the long‐term supplementation of fucoidan as an ergogenic aid to improve skeletal muscle performance. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of fucoidan on the skeletal muscle of mice. Male BL/6 mice (N = 8–10) were administered a novel fucoidan blend (FUC, 400 mg/kg/day) or vehicle (CON) for 4 weeks. Treatment and control experimental groups were further separated into exercise (CON+EX, FUC+EX… Show more

“…Alternatively, it could be increased muscle mass. There are reports of seaweed and skeletal muscle hypertrophy (Korivi et al., 2019 ) and muscle‐strengthening effects via fucoidan (McBean et al., 2021 ), so RS may also have a muscle‐mass‐increasing effect.…”

“…Its neuroprotective effects against brain injury, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Alzheimer’s disease, and Parkinson’s disease were reviewed [ 140 ]. Fucoidans supplementation in the mice mitigates the musculoskeletal changes and promotes muscle health and performance [ 141 ]. They suppress tumor cell proliferation factors and metastasis by increasing cell apoptosis and angiogenesis inhibition [ 142 ].…”

“…Chen et al reported that dietary supplement of fucoidan can prevent cancer cachexia-associated muscle atrophy in BALB/c mice during chemotherapy, which may be associated with suppressed muscle wasting-related genes including FoxO3a, MuRF1, and MAFbx and enhanced IGF-1dependent protein synthesis [128]. Oral administration of fucoidan for 4 weeks improves cross-sectional area of extensor digitorum longus fibers and soleus fibers and enhances the expression of MHC in gastrocnemius muscles muscle in C57BL/6 mice [130].…”
