Oral evaluation and procedures performed by dentists in patients admitted to the intensive care unit of a cancer center

Abstract: In conclusion, most of the patients presented oral problems related to side effects of oncological treatment. The dentist's participation in the ICU is important for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of oral problems.

“…Fungal and virus infections in the oral cavity are common in immunocompromised patients [10,25,26]. Similarly, our results showed a prevalence of 5.6 and 5.1% for oral candidiasis and oral herpes simplex, respectively; while in previously published retrospective studies evaluating oncologic inpatients, the incidences ranged from 16.6 to 39.1% [3,[9][10][11]. This difference may be attributed to the evaluation of hospitalized patients with several cancer diagnoses as well as the variety of reasons that lead to their hospitalizations.…”

“…In this context, impaired dental hygiene and oral lesions may lead to high rates of local (odontogenic infections) and systemic infections, such as respiratory diseases (ventilator-associated pneumonia), which have the potential to cause delays in, or interruptions to cancer treatment, as well as a decrease in the quality of life of patients. These oral complications secondary to cancer progression or related to oncologic treatment may also increase the overall treatment cost, due to the need for special diet (feeding tubes), analgesia with opioids, and prolonged hospitalization [3][4][5][6][7][8][9]. However, most of the previously published studies in this field focused on describing systemic complications in hospitalized cancer patients [8,10,11].…”

“…6 In addition, studying the systematic promotion of good oral health in patients admitted to intensive care units (ICUs) is relevant to studies on ventilator-associated pneumonia. 1,2,[6][7][8] The literature has indicated the possibility of developing ventilator-associated pneumonia 1,2,5,7,9 and that bacterial oropharyngeal colonization is an important risk factor, indicating that care in oral intervention can prevent plaque buildup, promote improvement in immunity, and reduce the possibility of developing these infections. 1,[9][10][11] Finally, it is important to evaluate the effect of research that can establish parallels between oral health factors including components of oral microbial flora immunity and dental plaque and how these variables may influence…”
