Oral Clonidine Pretreatment Prior to Venous Cannulation

Abstract: Clonidine is a preferential alpha-2 agonist drug that has been used for over 35 years to treat hypertension. Recently, it has also been used as a preoperative medication and as a sedative/anxiolytic drug. This randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled crossover clinical trial characterized the effects of oral clonidine pretreatment on intravenous catheter placement in 13 patients. Parameters measured included the bispectral index (BIS), Observer's Assessment of Alertness/Sedation Scale (OAA/S), frontal temp… Show more

“…It was observed that pre-treatment with oral clonidine prior to venous cannulation is able to reduce anxiety and pain and to provide cardiovascular stability in patients. 91 Over the past decade, clonidine has been investigated as adjuvant for anesthesia and in the postoperative period as analgesic agent. There is no doubt that clonidine was able to improve the analgesia of opioids and to prolong the analgesic action of local anaesthetics, 92 whereas there are controversial results regarding its secondary effects.…”

“…13 It seems that besides central alpha 2 adrenergic receptors agonistic effect, it also affects peripheral alpha1 adrenergic receptors causing vasoconstriction. Administration of clonidine does not affect the baroreceptor reflexes but reduces its sensibility.…”
