Background and Objectives: Oral cancer is one of the highly prevalent cancers worldwide and a leading cause of mortality in certain regions like South-Central Asia and a major public health problem. According to National Health Policy, oral cancer is the most common form of cancer in men and the third most common cancer in females in Nepal. Several studies have shown that public is not well aware of risk factors associated with oral cancer. The objective of this study was to assess the awareness of oral cancer among people of Tarahara-20. Material and Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted among people of age group 18-65 years in 2019. Data were collected from 128 respondents through face to face interview using Semi – structured interview schedule with non-probability purposive sampling method. Data entry and analysis was done in SPSS version 17. Descriptive statistics i.e. frequency, percentage, mean and standard deviation was used to assess the level of knowledge and inferential statistics i.e. chi square was used to find the association between awareness of oral cancer and selected demographic variables. Results: Total findings of the study showed that More than half (52.3%) of respondents were known about treatment modalities of Oral cancer whereas two third, 78.9% of respondents stated out movement is best for physical rehabilitation. Likewise, more than half (65.6%) had moderate level of awareness and 28.1% of the respondents had inadequate level of awareness regarding oral cancer. The result showed there was no association between level of awareness of oral cancer and selected demographic variables. Conclusion: The study concluded that awareness regarding oral cancer is moderate among community people of Tarhara. It reflects that efforts should be made to increase the awareness regarding oral cancer. Health education regarding oral cancer and its risk factors with periodic reinforcement will play an important role in creating awareness.

Geraniin has been reported to have numerous biological activities, including antiviral, antihypertensive, antihyperglycaemic, liver protective, antidiabetic, and apoptotic activities. However, the anti‐migration effects of geraniin on oral cancer remain elusive. In this study, we revealed the potential antitumor mechanisms of geraniin through the inhibition of the migration and invasion of human oral cancer cell lines SCC‐9 and SCC‐14. The results of gelatin zymography and Western blot assays revealed that geraniin significantly reduced the activity and expression of matrix metalloproteinase‐2 (MMP‐2) of oral cancer cells in a concentration‐dependent manner. Furthermore, geraniin potently suppressed the phosphorylation of focal adhesion kinase (FAK), Src, and extracellular signal‐regulated kinase (ERK)1/2 but did not affect the phosphorylation of p38 mitogen‐activated protein kinase (MAPK) and c‐Jun N‐terminal kinase 1/2. Moreover, blocking the MAPK/ERK1/2 pathway significantly enhanced the anti‐migration ability of geraniin in oral cancer cells. In conclusion, we demonstrated that geraniin inhibits the motility of SCC‐9 and SCC‐14 cells in vitro through a molecular mechanism that involves the attenuation of MMP‐2 expression and activity mediated by decreased FAK/Src and ERK1/2 pathways.

Introduction: This article describes the knowledge, attitudes and practices of users of the School of Dentistry at the Universidad de Antioquia about oral cancer.Materials and methods: Study with a quantitative, descriptive approach; a collection instrument was designed with which sociodemographic variables were ascertained, and the knowledge, attitudes and practices of users of the School of Dentistry at the Universidad de Antioquia were evaluated.Results and discussion: Although most of the people surveyed stated that they are aware of the existence of oral cancer, they do not recognize the warning signs of oral cancer and how they can prevent it; these results do not vary in individuals who are taken care of at the School. Despite these results, most respondents examine themselves intra-orally, although they do not have clear instructions on how to do it. Conclusions:The fact that people ignore how to act against oral cancer despite recognizing its existence is largely related to health professionals since, although the majority of respondents were attended to at the School of Dentistry and even in other healthcare centers, their knowledge, attitudes and practices did not vary much from those of people who did not have access to these programs. Therefore, it is suggested that an educational strategy be implemented to increase the knowledge of detection and prevention of oral cancer, in which the dentist is the main actor. Câncer bucal: conhecimentos, atitudes e práticas dos usuários da Faculdade de Odontologia da Universidad de Antioquia, Colômbia, 2016Resumo Introdução: este artigo descreve os conhecimentos, atitudes e práticas dos usuários da Faculdade de Odontologia da Universidad de Antioquia sobre o câncer bucal.Metodologia: estudo com abordagem quantitativa, descritiva; elaborou-se um instrumento de coleta de dados com o qual se questionou por variáveis sociodemográficas e se avaliaram os conhecimentos, atitudes e práticas dos referidos usuários.Resultados e discussão: embora a maioria das pessoas pesquisadas expressa saber da presença do câncer de boca, não reconhecem quais são os sinais de alarme dele e como podem preveni-lo; esses resultados não variam em pessoas que são atendidas em tal faculdade. Apesar dos resultados, grande parte dos participantes avalia-se intrabucalmente, mesmo não tendo instruções claras de como fazer isso.Conclusões: o fato de que as pessoas desconheçam como devem agir diante do câncer de boca, mesmo reconhecendo sua existência, está relacionado em grande medida com os profissionais da saúde, já que a maioria dos participantes recebia atendimento na Faculdade de Odontologia e inclusive em outros centros de saúde e, ainda assim, seus conhecimentos, atitudes e práticas não variavam com aqueles das pessoas que não tinham acesso a esses programas. Portanto, sugere-se implantar uma estratégia educativa que possa aumentar o conhecimento de detecção e prevenção de câncer de boca na qual o odontologista seja o ator principal.
