Oral Burn Contractures in Children

Abstract: Oral burn contractures in children present major reconstructive problem. Only few reports in literature discussed oral burns in children. Electrical, chemical, and thermal agents are the main causative agents for oral burns. Oral contractures can be classified into anterior, posterior, and total. Anterior contractures are usually caused by electrical burns and involve the oral commissure, lips, anterior buccal sulcus and surrounding mucosa, and anterior tongue. Posterior oral contractures are caused by caustic… Show more

“…Further, 7 of these dealt with delayed management of contractures of the oral mucosa. Only 3 reports describing the use of skin grafts for oral reconstruction were found [9][10][11]. Our patient presented with chemical burns restricted to the oral cavity alone, as she was able to spit the liquid out, avoiding any injuries distal to the oral cavity.…”

“…1,3 Los ácidos producen necrosis por coagulación proteínica con pérdida de agua, lo que forma una escara firme y protectora que dificulta en parte una mayor penetración, salvo en concentraciones elevadas. [6][7][8] Los álcalis provocan necrosis por licuefacción con desnaturalización de las proteínas, saponificación de las grasas y trombosis capilares. Estas reacciones favorecen la profundización de las lesiones.…”

“…Although the management of microstomia [1], esophageal strictures and other gastrointestinal complications secondary to acid ingestion have been well discussed in the literature [2], there are very few reports that deal with the correction of intra-oral scar contracture and tongue fusion [3][4][5]. There has been no report that describes the effects of long-standing oral contracture secondary to burns on the growth and development of the maxillofacial structures.…”
