Oral bioavailability of quercetin from different quercetin glycosides in dogs

Abstract: Although the flavonol quercetin is used as a supplement in commercial dog food, data on quercetin bioavailability in dogs are not available. Thus, we investigated quercetin bioavailability (measured as area under the concentration -time curve) in nine adult beagle dogs at an oral dose of 10 mg/kg body weight (b.w.). The major fraction (. 80 %) of flavonols circulating in blood plasma were conjugated metabolites of quercetin. The absolute bioavailability of quercetin (i.e. the fraction that reaches the systemic… Show more

“…A fatenriched diet enhances quercetin3Oglucoside bioavailability, which might be owing to improved solubility and enhanced absorption of the lipophilic quercetin aglycone via lipid micelles, as well as delayed elimination of quercetin from the plasma owing to a prolonged enter ohepatic circulation [12] . It is important to note that follow ing the enzymatic hydrolysis by hesperidinase, rutin is mainly bioconverted into Q3G [4,7,8,1012] , thereby increasing the absorption [15] and bioavailability [16] .…”

“…25 In addition, quercetin is included in a novel class of chemotherapeutic drugs for the treatment of various cancers 26 and can also be combined with ultrasonic pretreatment to increase the concentration of quercetin to inhibit the growth of the prostate and skin cancer cell lines. 27 However, quercetin has low aqueous solubility, poor absorption, and rapid metabolism (bioavailability approximately 1%-5%), 28 all of which can generate in vivo results that differ from the powerful in vitro efficacy of quercetin. Thus, encapsulation of quercetin in nanodroplets may improve its pharmacokinetic profile, and with the use of ultrasound-triggered rupturing, enable effective drug delivery to provide anticarcinogenic effects.…”
