Mucosal reactions in patients receiving radiation treatment for head and neck cancer are regarded as unavoidable side-effects. The degree of mucositis experienced is determined by the treatment dose, radiation field size and fractionation schedules prescribed for individual patients. This article reviews a double-blind placebo-controlled trial of an antibiotic pastille which was aimed at reducing the more extreme effects of radiation mucositis. It identifies the role of oral care and hygiene, oral assessment and nursing support within a clinical trial setting. The results showed that the active pastille had a beneficial effect on the degree of mucositis experienced. Patients had a reduction in their weight loss in the active arm of the trial and the amount of yeast bacteria present in the oral cavity of those patients also diminished. It is worth noting that those patients in the placebo arm of the trial received both physical and psychological support from the nursing staff which may not have been available as frequently if they had not been in the trial.

A survey of nurses, director-supervisors, and nursing home health aides who provide home care in Iowa showed that many misconceptions exist about what constitutes appropriate oral and dental care practices for the older adult. Despite differences in formal education among these nursing personnel, several misunderstandings about dental problems among older adults were common to all three employment groups. These misconceptions represented a broad range of topics from the characteristics of oral cancer lesions to the appropriate use of denture adhesives; two dealt specifically with the recognition of potential oral cancer lesions. This paper describes attitudes and misinformation held by the respondents, and suggests ways to correct these fallacies through in-service training programs.

The purpose of this study was to determine if instruction in how to perform the MDS (Minimum Data Set) oral health assessment and RAP (Resident Assessment Protocol) Summary required by federal regulations will improve nurses' accuracy of the assessments. Fifty residents, admitted within 90 days before a training lecture, were assessed by 18 nurses. A 30-minute training session demonstrated how to perform an oral examination, including hands-on practice under a dentist's supervision. Seven to ten days after the lecture, the nurses re-examined the same residents. These assessments were compared with the admission assessments and a dentist's findings (reference). The results of this study indicate that a 30-minute training session made a significant difference in improving nurses' accuracy in completing the assessments with regard to oral health status and treatment need.
