Abstract:Knowledge of oral diseases obtained from biopsy records provides more accurate data about the diagnosis and oral health of elderly patients. These indicators thus support the development of specific health policies for the prevention and treatment of oral and maxillofacial lesions that affect this population.
“…Of the 7619 cases of oral and maxillofacial lesions diagnosed in older people at four Brazilian centres according to the previous study of Silva et al, 491 (6.8%) were diagnosed as odontogenic cysts, 76 (1.0%) as non‐odontogenic cysts and 75 (1.0%) as odontogenic tumours. This study provides detailed characteristics of these lesions.…”

“…Biopsies and histopathological data were obtained from the archives of four referral centres of oral diagnosis in Brazil: Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology of the University of Pernambuco (UPE—northeastern region), Oral Pathology Service of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Norte (UFRN—northeastern region), Department of Oral Surgery and Pathology of the Federal University of Minas Gerais (UFMG—southeastern region) and Diagnostic Center for Oral Diseases of the Federal University of Pelotas (UFPel—southern region) (Figure ). This retrospective study is a part of a previously published analysis conducted by our research group which investigated a total of 7619 participants aged ≥60 years with oral and maxillofacial lesions. The time covered by the present investigation was the same at the four centres studied, that is from 2000 to 2016.…”

“…Population ageing is accompanied by a higher incidence of oral and systemic diseases. Therefore, understanding oral and maxillofacial lesions through biopsy records is important for dentists and geriatricians as it provides more accurate information about the diagnosis and prognosis of elders …”
Odontogenic cysts were relatively common, whereas odontogenic tumours and non-odontogenic cysts were rarer among the older people studied in the present investigation.
