OPTN/SRTR 2020 Annual Data Report: Kidney

Abstract: The year 2020 presented significant challenges to the field of kidney transplantation. After increasing each year since 2015 and reaching the highest annual count to date in 2019, the total number of kidney trans‐ plants decreased slightly, to 23642, in 2020. The decrease in total kidney transplants was due to a decrease in living donor transplants; the number of deceased donor transplants rose in 2020. The number of patients waiting for a kidney transplant in the United States declined slightly in 2020, drive… Show more

“…Low- dose tacrolimus protocols have been implemented in several centers after it was found safe and advantageous for renal function when combined with mycophenolate mofetil and corticosteroids after renal transplantation ( 19 , 20 ). A tacrolimus- based immunosuppressive regime was given to over 90% of new adult kidney transplant recipients in the United States in 2020 ( 21 ). CNI- free protocols after renal transplantation are available, which includes mTOR- inhibitors ( 22 ) or belatacept ( 23 ) but often lead to more rejections.…”

“…Over the same period, pancreatic and intestinal transplants dropped 21% and 49%, respectively. The demand for transplants continues to rise ( Colvin et al, 2022 ; Horslen et al, 2022 ; Israni, 2022 ; Kandaswamy et al, 2022 ; Kwong et al, 2022 ; Lentine et al, 2022 ; Valapour et al, 2022 ).…”

“…Beyond clinical and scientific challenges, the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic on intensive care unit services and staff has been immense, reflecting a well-documented disruption in organ donation activity and a consequent reduction in deceased donor transplants. Defining strategies aimed to promote living donation would represent the logical course of action for maintaining a sufficient volume of KT procedures, particularly in those countries that have witnessed a devastating first wave of COVID-19 [ 7 , 8 ]. It is also noticeable how the attitudes of patients on waiting lists might have been influenced by the pandemic.…”
