OPTN/SRTR 2013 Annual Data Report: Liver

Abstract: During 2013, 10,479 adult candidates were added to the liver transplant waiting list, compared with 10,185 in 2012; 5921 liver transplants were performed, and 211 of the transplanted organs were from living donors. As of December 31, 2013, 15,027 candidates were registered on the waiting list, including 12,407 in active status. The most significant change in allocation policy affecting liver waitlist trends in 2013 was the Share 35 policy, whereby organs from an entire region are available to candidates with m… Show more

“…HCV positivity has been observed in 5.6% of all potential donors, and in 18% of potential PHS (public health safety) increased risk donors, who are defined as being "at a higher than average risk for transmitting viruses such as HIV, HCV, and hepatitis B (HBV)" [7,22]. were discarded [5,6,23]. This percentage has dramatically decreased (from 28% in 2010 to 11% in 2015) with the advent of the DAAs, with corresponding increase of HCV-positive liver grafts to HCV-positive recipients [5].…”

“…28 Even regression of cirrhosis was demonstrated in some cases. 29 The improved SVR rates and safety profiles of all oral DAA has led to the treatment of patients with decompensated cirrhosis awaiting LT. 30 Moreover, it has been shown that HCV RNA becomes negative after 2-4 weeks of treatment, and those who are transplanted after becoming HCV RNA negative will be have very low the risk of HCV recurrence after transplantation. 31 This treatment is generally well tolerated and there is no difference in the incidence of hospitalization, sepsis and death between treated and untreated cohorts.…”

“…Chronic hepatitis C-associated liver disease accounts for 13-25% of liver transplantations in the ET and UNOS regions [13,36]. The leading indications for liver transplantation are functional liver failure and early HCC in patients with compensated cirrhosis [37].…”
