The paper focuses on current mechanical waste processing technologies and out-of-the-box processes linked to the processing of coal and mineral resources, to ensure high-quality feedstock recycling of polyolefin-rich post-consumer plastic fractions. Moreover, the study aims to provide the basis for the technical and economic feasibility of the chemical recycling route of this plastic fraction. When evaluating common mechanical processes, either dry or wet ones, sink-float separation in a cylindrical centrifugal force separator achieves the best results. It combines the advantages of a simple, robust apparatus of low complexity and high capacity with selective separation through the accelerated settling of particles in the centrifugal field. Furthermore, the disconnection of the separation medium feed from the solid input increases residence times. Based on the above findings, a pilot-scale plant was constructed which consists of a centrifugal force separator and a hydro jig for the pre-separation of heavy waste components. Several test campaigns were conducted to separate polyolefins from various waste fractions. Two-stage processing in the centrifugal force separator rendered almost 90 wt% of polyolefin content in the produced lightweight fraction and of polyolefin recovery. One-stage processing, on the other hand, resulted in reduced polyolefin content in the lightweight fraction.

A notation system is proposed to characterize separation systems. Four elements were taken into account: quantity and quality of separation products, component type in the products and feed, as well as the value of feature utilized for separation. The proposed symbolism consists of two parts. The first part describes separation procedure while the second one describes the way separation results are analyzed and presented. For instance, symbol 3[F n,5 P i,2 XejjUP(Re FPjXek jRc FPj ) (j ¼ 1...5, k¼Cu) V 4 ]2 indicates that three identical feeds (F) were separated twice (2) non-ideally (n) into five (j ¼ 1.5) products (P), which were further separated ideally (i) into two (k ¼ 1 . . . 2) chemical components (Xe) (for instance, Cu and remaining elements). The results of separation were analyzed as cumulative recovery Re of Cu in products versus cumulative yield Rc of products at four levels of operational variables (V 4 ). It also means that each sample was investigated six times for reproducibility. The analysis was based on comparing yield (quantity parameter) and recovery (quality parameter), and was named upgrading (UP). Other parameters that can be considered are component type and value of feature used for separation, and all four provide six ways of analyzing separation systems named classification, sorting, splitting, distribution, and description. The proposed system in this paper is symbolic representation of separation procedure and the way of evaluation separation results is based on an easy-to-write sequence of signs helping a quick and precise understanding of the considered separation system. The proposed symbolism can be useful in applications such as computer programs and algorithms, fast communication, and education on existence of other options of separation delineation.

Abstract. The importance of pigments for the civilization is obvious and well documented. Although these materials have been discovered many years ago, research continues nowadays. Industries often require new shades, colors and more homogeneous and stable pigments. The selection of mineral pigments is of major importance to acquire high quality, color, purity and mostly free of chemical contaminants, such as chemicals from froth flotation process. The region of Catalã o, Brazil, has several mineralizations, including apatite, barite, magnetite, monazite, niobium, titanite and vermiculite. Nowadays phosphate, niobium and barite are economically exploited. For the production of these minerals, the magnetite is removed through magnetic separation and sent to a tailings dam. The aim of this study is to evaluate the possibility of producing iron oxide to be used as pigments as well as to evaluate the pulsation frequency influence in the jigging process. A Denver jig, in lab scale was used. Test were carried out using six different particle sizes and four pulsation frequencies, keeping the water flow rate fixed at 20 liters per minute. The results indicate that iron oxide production for pigments is viable from phosphate rock tailings, since it was possible to produce magnetite concentrated with grades over 90% and magnetite recovery around 40%.
