Optimum Sowing Window and Yield Forecasting for Maize in Northern and Western Bangladesh Using CERES Maize Model

Abstract: Determination of the optimum sowing window not only can improve maize yield significantly but also can fit maize in the existing cropping pattern. To get the advantages of sowing maize at the optimum time, a study was designed and carried out at the research field of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Rangpur, Bangladesh during 2015–2017. Another aim of the study was to forecast the yield of maize for the northern and western regions of Bangladesh using the CERES-Maize model. The study considered 5 No… Show more

“…In addition, the results of predictions of the effect of sowing date on wheat yield using APSIM model were also consistent with many of the findings of simulations using other crop models in the semi-arid environment 34 , 115 118 . Therefore, extended life duration and favorable temperature especially at the grain filling stage, might be the main reason for the higher grain yield in early sowing dates 43 , 119 , 120 . While, delaying the sowing date beyond the optimum sowing date led to reduced grain yield, due to a shorter vegetative growth period of wheat 115 , 121 .…”

“…Crops get injured if the daytime temperature exceeds 30°C reducing the yield (Ben-Asher et al, 2008). Hence, optimum sowing can improve crop yield significantly and make crops fit in existing cropping patterns (Choudhury et al, 2021). Usually, plants require a certain growing degree day (GDD) to attain the phenological stages, depending on daily temperature and sowing windows (Dahmardeh, 2012).…”

“…Optimum sowing window can not only improve maize yield but also fit corn in existing cropping pattern (Choudhury et al, 2021). Several researches had confirmed that baby corn yield significantly decreases with increase in temperature.…”
