Optimum harvesting time of herbaceous peony buds for cutting flowers

Abstract: The herbaceous peony is one of the cut flowers that has become increasingly popular in the international market in recent years. In the study, 11 cultivars of herbaceous peonies suitable for cutting flowers were selected; different harvesting stages (three or four stages) were identified according to bud development observation (bud firmness, bud diameter, sepal angle, petal angle, and color showing). Moreover, flower development and vase life were also recorded in the experiment of vase.

“…Due to its huge flowers, bright flower colors, beautiful flower types and strong flower fragrances, it is loved by all people around the world, and expanded from the first garden cultivation to the cut flower cultivation. In Europe and the United States, herbaceous peony, known as the “wedding flower”, is a high-grade cut flower for weddings and other festive occasions, so its market prospect is very broad [ 2 , 3 ]. In the production practice, we find that the P. lactiflora inflorescence stem is easy to bend or break and can not support flower weight, which seriously affects the quality of the cut flower.…”

“…For Lilium asiaticum 'Elite', a six grade FI classification was established, where each grade is characterized as follows: with dense green buds (grade 1); with light orange buds (grade 2); with red but unexpanded flowers (grade 3); with half-opened flowers (grade 4); with fully open flowers (grade 5); and with senescing flowers (grade 6) [32]. Similarly, for herbaceous peony, seven grades based on the main characteristics observed from the bud stage to petal senescence and withering were defined across 11 cultivars [33]. The distinctions within each grade were determined by factors such as bud color, sepal adhesion to the bud, petal opening and closing, the curling and shedding of the exterior petals, etc.…”
