Optimum Fluid Design for Drilling and Cementing a Well Drilled with Coil Tubing Technology

Abstract: TX 75083-3836, U.S.A., fax 01-972-952-9435. AbstractThis paper describes the strategy, design and the drilling fluid and cement operations in the first two wells drilled with Coil Tubing on the Gullfaks field. The strategy and design is explained in great detail. Excellent hole cleaning was achieved in both wells.A serious problem of differential sticking was eliminated by a radical change in drilling fluid strategy and design. It was possible to successfully drill a 3 ¾" hole, log and run/cement a 2 7/8" line… Show more

“…The difference between extensional viscosities of XG and PHPA solutions (Figure 3) is much higher than difference between their shear viscosity values ( Figure 2). These results seem to be in support of Svendsen et al's (1998) conclusion that the effect of extensional viscosity on the filtration loss is more significant than the effect of shear viscosity.…”

“…Naverrete and Mitchell (1995) suggested that for the XG solutions, the flow was dominated by the shear viscosity, whereas for the PHPA solutions the flow was dominated by the extensional viscosity. Svendsen et al (1998) has shown that extensional viscosity can be successfully used to establish an internal filter cake in association with coiled tubing drilling fluid application.…”

“…Using formate based mud can solve these concerns that have been usually encountered with conventional water and oil-based muds (Svendsen et al, 1998;Svoboda, 2002;Messler et al, 2004;Downs et al, 2006).…”
