Optimum Fisheries Management under Climate Variability: Evidence from Artisanal Marine Fishing in Ghana

Abstract: Abstract:In most developing coastal countries, the artisanal fisheries sector is managed as a common pool resource. As a result, such fisheries are overcapitalized and overfished. In Ghana, in addition to anthropogenic factors, there is evidence of rising coastal temperature and its variance, which could impact the environmental carrying capacity of the fish stock. This study investigates the effect of climate variation on biophysical parameters and yields. Our results indicate that the rising temperature is d… Show more

“…In general, fishery policy has focused on large-scale fishing, resulting in a lack of knowledge on many biological, environmental, socioeconomic, management, and policy aspects of small-scale fisheries [3]. Small-scale fisheries could be an important source of income for some regions [2,4,5], and are critical for livelihoods and food supply [6], in addition to the employment of fishers and other workers in small-scale fisheries and related activities which provide vital supplements to livelihoods", especially in times of crisis [7].…”

“…In addition, along with the extensive coastal development, the environment of China's coastal waters has been profoundly influenced by land-based pollution in recent decades [7], which has further led to habitat loss and depletion of fishery resources [8,9]. Climate change complicates the challenges currently facing China's marine fisheries and poses an enormous threat to the development of marine fisheries [10][11][12][13].…”
