Optimum discrete design of steel tower structures using optics inspired optimization method

Abstract: This paper presents an optics inspired optimization (OIO) method for optimum design of steel tower structures with discrete variables. Inspired by the optical characteristics of concave and convex mirrors, OIO tries to solve optimization problem. In OIO, the surface of the objective function to be minimized is considered as a reflecting wavy mirror consisting of peaks and valleys. To generate a new solution (artificial image point) from a given solution (artificial object/light point) in the search space, it is… Show more

“…Multilayer layouts can also be considered. Besides the proposed metaheuristic algorithms, developing the grouping version of other new metaheuristic algorithms such as optics-inspired optimization [59][60][61][62]) or F3EA metaheuristic algorithm [63] and measuring their suitability for OPS is recommended. Finally, developing exact solution methods like column generation or enhanced MILP formulations [64] would be worthwhile to consider in future research.…”

“…The OIO is a new metaheuristic algorithm developed for numerical optimization that works based on the rationale of the optical characteristics of spherical mirrors. [41][42][43] In this section, we first prepare for some optic-related background that will be used metaphorically in the body of OIO. We then use all these background knowledge directly, without manipulation, to develop the so called OIO algorithm.…”

“…League Championship Algorithm (LCA) [38] inspired by the sporting competitions between the teams in sports leagues is one of such novel algorithms, which has been able to exhibit efficient performance for different kinds of problems [39][40][41][42][43]. Optics Inspired Optimisation (OIO) [44] algorithm is another recently developed meta-heuristic inspired by the optical characteristics of spherical mirrors in physics, which has been remarkably efficient for engineering applications [45][46][47][48]. The main objective of this paper is to assess the performance of different meta-heuristic algorithms, including PSO, different variants of DE, BBO, CA, OIO, and LCA, for optimum layup of laminated composite plates.…”
