Optimizing the Surgical Management of Zygomaticomaxillary Complex Fractures

Abstract: Zygomaticomaxillary complex (ZMC) fractures are a group of fractures that can significantly alter the structure, function, and appearance of the midface, including the globe. Like other facial fractures, the optimal management of operative ZMC fractures requires anatomic reduction of all fractures followed by rigid internal fixation. However, surgical treatment of these fractures can be quite challenging with the potential for high rates of complications. The goal of this article is to provide an overview of Z… Show more

“…Zygomatic fractures rank second after nasal fractures among the mid-face fractures (8)(9)(10). Although previous studies have reported different incidence rates for zygomatic fractures, a study on the adult population demonstrated that approximately 17% of facial traumas involved zygomatic fractures (11). Most previous studies have reported higher prevalence of zygomatic fractures in males and in the second and third decades of life (4:1 male/female ratio) (12).…”

“…Fractures of the ZMC most commonly occur due to assault and motor vehicle accidents. [4] The most common cause of iZMC was motor vehicle accidents in our sample. Bogusiak and Arkuszewski [5] found a higher incidence of assaults in their review of ZMC fractures in the Polish population.…”

“…However, displaced fractures require surgical reduction and stabilization. [3,4] In this study, 21 out of 25 patients required surgical intervention. Majority of the patients in this study had middle-energy fractures which are similar to those reported by other authors.…”
