Optimizing the Lifetime of IoT-Based Star and Mesh Networks

Abstract: In this paper, we propose and analyze a novel optimization model to maximize the lifetime of Internet-of-Things (IoT) networks, including the Low Power Wide-Area Network (LPWAN) based Sigfox star networks and Time Slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH) mesh networks. An IoT cloud manages the IoT network adapting to sensed phenomenon changes in the deployment area retrieved from peered cloud-based environmental monitoring systems. While increasing the number of paths for IoT devices to cloud communication increases rel… Show more

“…The introduction of the LoRaWAN standard established open standards, promoting interoperability [17]. LoRa mesh networks subsequently emerged to extend the range by allowing nodes to relay data [18], enhancing coverage and resilience [19]. This evolution has been accompanied by optimizations in energy consumption [20], which are crucial for battery-powered IoT devices, and specific developments tailored to environments such as forested areas [21], smart cities [22], and industrial IoT.…”
