Optimizing the Chin and Jawline Appearance: Does Surgery or Injection Make Sense?

Abstract: The chin is a crucial landmark and mandates careful consideration for facial appearance. Optimal chin appearance requires evaluation and treatment in three dimensions: anteroposterior, transverse, and vertical planes. The optimization of chin deficiencies requires understanding of bony anatomy as well as the relationship of the adjacent facial structures including the lip, teeth, and nose. The practitioner should be familiar with techniques in injection, placement of alloplastic implants, as well bony geniopla… Show more

“…Galderma Chin Retrusion Scale assessments were performed by blinded evaluators to minimize bias. Other aspects of chin appearance (e.g., shape and width), which are also important for chin attractiveness, 4 , 5 were captured in the FACE-Q Satisfaction with Chin scale, further complemented by evaluation of overall aesthetic improvement by subjects and investigators, and objective measurements of chin volume change.…”

“…This may be due to the fact that the lateral canthal tendon (LCT) is more likely to deform horizontally (20). In the lower face, although the chin is supported by the mental protuberance of the mandible, the skin overlying the chin is thick and measures between 2.00 and 2.50 mm in most adults (21). Moreover, there are dense s.c. fat pads and musculature over the bony structure (22).…”

“…The menton is the inferior most portion and determines the vertical height of the chin. The paragonion is a protruding region lateral to the pogonion on both sides and determines the transverse width of the chin 2 (Figure 1).…”
