Optimizing Soil Fertility Management Strategies to Enhance Banana Production in Volcanic Soils of the Northern Highlands, Tanzania

Abstract: Banana is an important crop in high altitude areas of Tanzania, grown widely both as a food staple and as the main source of income. However, its production is constrained by low soil fertility, a result of gradual nutrient mining by the crop. Currently, soil fertility management in banana-based farming systems in the country relies mainly on applications of animal manure. However, the amount of manure produced in most farms is not enough to replenish soil fertility due to the small number of animals kept by s… Show more

“…At is well known that organic manure fermentation and decomposition produced and liberties some growth regulators and nutritional elements, such as IAA, cytokines, N, K, B and Zn. In addition organic manure decomposition producing some chelating compounds that can save the elements from loss (Mengel, 1985;Marschner, 1995;Mengel, 2007;Ibrahim et al, 2015;Meya et al, 2020). The aforementioned roles of organic manure tea could be explanted its effect on improve fruit physical and chemical properties that clearly showed in the present study.…”

“…Sustainable intensification of the land currently under agricultural production is required to avoid further expansion into forest-or non-cultivated land . Although fertilizer application is reported to have beneficial effects on banana production (Meya et al, 2020), adoption remains low due to high prices, low availability and poor market access. The practice is also only profitable in regions with good farm gate prices (e.g., close to Kampala) and good crop responses (e.g., Southern-Uganda) .…”

“…Una alternativa para reducir la cantidad de fertilizante químico aplicado la constituye la determinación de la cantidad de N que el suelo es capaz de proveer a las plantas (Herrera et al, 2017;Meya et al, 2020). Es por ello que, en este estudio se planteó evaluar la mineralización de nitrógeno en suelos cultivados con plátano con el fin de orientar las estrategias de manejo y realizar recomendaciones apropiadas de fertilización.…”

“…Los suelos de estudio fueron descritos por González-Pedraza et al (2014) como ligeramente ácidos a moderadamente ácidos, con porcentaje de carbono orgánico medio, clase textural franco limoso y franco en los An alternative to reduce the amount of chemical fertilizer applied is the determination of the amount of N that the soil is capable of providing the plants (Herrera et al, 2017;Meya et al, 2020). Due to this, it was proposed to evaluate nitrogen mineralization in soils cultivated with plantain in order to guide management strategies and make appropriate fertilization recommendations.…”
