Optimizing Size of Variable Renewable Energy Sources by Incorporating Energy Storage and Demand Response

Abstract: The electricity sector contributes to most of the global warming emissions generated from fossil fuel resources which are becoming rare and expensive due to geological extinction and climate change. It urges the need for less carbon-intensive, inexhaustible Renewable Energy Sources (RES) that are economically sound, easy to access and improve public health. The carbon-free salient feature is the driving motive that propels widespread utilization of wind and solar RES in comparisons to rest of RES. However, sto… Show more

“…T HE increasing concerns about sustainable environment and energy systems have led to the widespread growth of renewable energy resources such as solar and wind energy, and significant change in the composition of the electricity generation mix [1]- [4]. The highest annual growth of these resources can be observed all over the world and manifests the fast energy transition [5]. For example, the worldwide wind power capacity has grown from 180 GW in 2010 to 622 GW in 2019 [6].…”

“…BESSs, which are devices that either store or deliver energy as required, are a valuable source of flexibility in power systems. One of the essential applications of the BESS is that of maintaining the balance between supply and demand when disturbed by variability of renewable energy sources [17]. Frequent and long-period power interruptions are no longer acceptable and most government officials are increasingly aware of the importance of grid resilience.…”

“…Energy is the need of the modern world, but its conventional sources are depleting with each passing day, which includes thermal, nuclear, and natural gas [1][2][3]. These sources are insufficient and not environment friendly [4,5].…”

“…Therefore, it is becoming imperative to find alternate sources of energy that can meet the requirements of energy in the future and should be environmentally friendly [6]. High prices of electrical energy from thermal power plants and intermittency of renewable energy sources [2] move extra emphasis towards hydro-thermal scheduling [7]. Additionally, owing to the continuous diminishing of conventional sources [1,2], the active power generation and the control and compensation of reactive power are becoming the focus for the economic dispatch [8][9][10][11][12], and researchers have also found the way to optimally generate, shed, and forecast the electrical power [13][14][15].…”
