Optimizing Energy Use, Cost and Carbon Emission through Building Information Modelling and a Sustainability Approach: A Case-Study of a Hospital Building

Abstract: The construction industry (CI) has a significant impact on the environment and on climate change due to the emission of greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide. Globally accepted Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), specifically SDG 7 (Access to Affordable, Reliable, Sustainable and Modern Energy for All), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), and SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) stress the responsible utilization of energy in various industries, including construction. The CI uses almost ha… Show more

“…For example, Ichikowitz et al [54] discuss the strain caused by e-waste, and [64][65][66] are examples of works discussing the straining impact on the environment. Six articles discuss energy burdens, for instance, Khahro et al [81] discuss the benefits of Building Information Models (BIM) in this domain, and Xu et al [47] discuss waste heat recovery in power plants. Regarding further discussions on Infrastructure, strains include growing tourism [39], management at landfill sites [48], water waste [69] and increased production [56].…”

“…The benefits of using recycled materials in construction is driven by the ideology that our natural resources will eventually become scarce if humans continue to mismanage and overuse them, as is occurring currently. Therefore, the benefits will be realized by the three main pillars of sustainability, namely environment, economy, and our society [ 48 ]. The following will outline some of the positive impact of using recycled materials in construction.…”
