Optimizing acupuncture treatment for dry eye syndrome: a systematic review

Abstract: AbstractsBackgroundIn a former meta-analysis review, acupuncture was considered a potentially effective treatment for dry eye syndrome (DES), but there were heterogeneities among the outcomes. We updated the meta-analysis and conducted subgroup analysis to reduce the heterogeneity and suggest the most effective acupuncture method based on clinical trials.MethodsWe searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) in 10 databases (MEDLINE, EMBASE, CENTAL, AMED, SCOPUS, CNKI, Wangfang database, Oriental Medicine … Show more

“…The purpose of the present systematic review and meta-analysis was to analyze the difference between each acupuncture modality group (periocular acupoints group and periocular acupoints plus body acupoints group) and the AT group. Although previous systematic reviews and meta-analyses have confirmed that acupuncture may effectively relieve DED (26)(27)(28), to the best of our knowledge, the present study was the first systematic review evaluating the therapeutic effects of multi-acupoint acupuncture on DED. In comparison with previous studies, stricter inclusion and exclusion criteria were adopted.…”

“…A large number of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and systematic reviews have indicated that acupuncture is effective in the treatment of various conditions, including vomiting, dental pain, chronic pain, lower back pain and eye disease (22)(23)(24)(25). In addition, several systematic reviews have confirmed that acupuncture is effective for DED (26)(27)(28). Lee et al (26) reported that the effect of acupuncture on dry eye was better than that of artificial tears (AT) as indicated by the results of Schirmer's I test (SIT), tear break up time (BUT) test, response rate and corneal fluorescein staining (CFS).…”

“…Acupuncture is a traditional medicine technique, not only an alternative medicinal technique but also one of the most popular forms of CAM used to treat a variety of conditions. 9,10 While recent studies report on its efficacy for dry eye, [11][12][13] there is lack of consensus on the most effective acupuncture method. This can be attributed to the study design, insufficient sample sizes, and few therapeutic sessions.…”

“…Acupuncture is an ancient therapy with a history of thousands of years and is now widely used in the medical system. Some clinical studies and systematic reviews show that acupuncture is increasingly used in the clinical treatment of many eye diseases, including dry eye syndrome, [ 20 ] blepharoptosis, [ 21 ] oculomotor paralysis, [ 22 ] blepharospasm, [ 23 ] and other ophthalmic diseases, and has a good effect. [ 24 , 25 ] In addition, some randomized controlled trials (RCTs) have reported that acupuncture, as an adjuvant therapy, can effectively improve the diopter and vision in the sense of myopic children.…”
